To say this is a complete disappointment is an understatement.
Nintendo’s CEO, Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the company’s next gen console, the Wii U, will not have DVD/Blu-Ray compatibility.
In a recent E3 Q&A panel, Iwata made it clear that the Wii U will not support DVD or Blu-Rays whatsoever. Why Nintendo decided not to go the route of other next gen consoles is beyond us. However, Iwata did provide an excuse by saying that “”The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-Rays, such that it didn’t warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies.”
The “gaming experience” cop out will eventually get tired, as consumers expect/demand more from Nintendo. What are your thoughts on this? Sound off in the comments section below.

I was gonna go off about how stupid that is, but you know what? Why? Really, why? I think anybody that actually wants to jump into the Blue Ray era already has a player or a PS3 for that. Nobody out there has JUST a Wii and that’s it, so why pump money and time into that particular area of entertainment when everybody has some form of a DVD/BlueRay player in their household?
At the same time it’s kind of a stab going back to the whole press conference with the whole “Time to watch baseball” thing. With a DvD player installed and images from the console being pulled ti the controller’s screen, you could keep watching your movies without hogging the TV which really would’ve been nice. That aside, I understand the decision.
Nintendo has been always been about gaming. I can’t blame them for that in the slightest. Just because the telephone doesn’t wanna be a telephone anymore doesn’t mean a Nintendo Home Console has to be anything other than a Nintendo Home Console.
yeah, I co-sign u webba but I’m still salty that I won’t be watching dvds on my wii pad :/
