Having a soft spot for Sonic the Hedgehog since his debut 20 years ago, you could imagine that a title like Sonic Generations would strike a chord for me. I’m sure there are many Sonic fans that feel the same. After playing the Sonic Generations demo though, I feel a bit differently.

As reported, the demo for Sonic Generations is available now so I figured I should give it a spin to see if this game is worth putting on your radar.

The demo only allows you to play as “Classic Sonic” on the Green Hill zone. So this demo really ends up being a hi-res version of the Green Hill Zone from the first Sonic game, with the ability to spin dash. Which is ok, I guess but I really wanted to take “Modern Sonic” through the Green Hill zone. Anyways, right off the bat, the game is a lot more detailed, as it should be, however I noticed that with so much detail in the background, some of the enemies do not stand out as much as they did in the past which equated to me running into enemies even on multiple playthroughs.

Another thing I noticed was “Classic Sonic” feeling stiff in comparison to how he handled on the Genesis games. I’ll need to pop in one of the earlier Sonic games to be sure, but “Classic Sonic” definitely felt off to me. His jumps seemed shorter and his handling was a bit chunky. I know “Classic Sonic” is a bit rotund in comparison to the modern version, but there’s no need for that to be reflected in the gameplay.

Overall, it was a fun little trip down nostalgia lane to play Green Hill Zone again, even with an update to the original stage music. I am looking forward to playing more of this title but I truly hope the clunkyness of “Classic Sonic” doesn’t stick around.

Have you played the Sonic Generations Demo? Do you agree or am I nitpicking? Sound off below!
