In this Music Monday, I would like to introduce you to one of the greatest music players the world has ever known. The Sega Saturn, home to such titles as Panzer Dragoon and my personal fave Astal, was the first console I owned that could play audio CDs. Now I know Monday is usually about…actual music but during this time many big game titles (such as the ones mentioned previously) came with a separate CD soundtrack. My love and appreciation of gaming music comes from time spent with the Saturn.
As soon as I played my first CD my mind was blown by the music quality and the futuristic music player. Gone were the days I had to physically stop and rewind to back to a previous track. Instead, I was greeted to glowing navigational orbs while traveling through space . I spent many hours in my room listening to whatever music I could get my hands on. I didn’t figure out until a year later that it also contained a small Easter egg as well. As seen in the video below, when you hide the music controls there’s a space shuttle that flies across the screen showing the sheer 3D power of the Saturn. Now sit back and enjoy Tsurugi No Mai by Nujabes on the late great Saturn Music Player.
