Music Monday: Final Fantasy IV

The Final Fantasy series has always had outstanding music, but IV demolishes the others overall.  Maybe that’s why I prefer IV over the others, besides being the last truly simplistic title in the series.  The soundtrack of FFIV is packed with unforgettable melodies and songs that stand alone outside of the video game world.

Of course, we have the standard Prelude and Final Fantasy theme included, but there’s so much more than that. Shortly into the game, we meet Rosa and hear the Theme of Love, easily the game’s most popular track. It has been vocalized and renamed as “tsuki no Akari,” or light of the moon, and even became music curriculum in Japan. This is almost unheard of for game music. Then we get to the sweeping strings of the mysterious overworld theme, which will get your heart racing every time you hear it. It may not be as beautiful as Final Fantasy III’s overworld theme, but it definitely gets you going more than its predecessor.

So we’ve got a few classics. Okay, what more could there be, right? Well then you start really getting into the battle theme, which has some wonderful brass action going on and definitely doesn’t feel too dark or too happy. It’s right inbetween and in fact switches between the two, the way a battle tends to go in those old turn-based RPGs. And while we’re at it, let’s cover the dungeon and boss battle themes; the dungeon gives you a sense of adventure, as if you’re Indiana Jones exploring the next cavern, and the boss theme is just a tad bit different from the battle theme (yet different enough to know you’re about to be in for a tough fight). The boss theme doesn’t drone on too long and has a great bass line which is a treat for the ears.

Finally, my favorite track; Gilbert’s Lute. A melody you’ll likely get nostalgia from years down the line. And who can forget The Lunarians and Another Moon, two incredibly unique tracks that recent Final Fantasy games seem to be missing. Even Mysidia seems to have its own thematic quirks.

And last but definitely not least, the Battle with Golbeza’s Four Emperors. So melodic for a boss theme, and it’s got a few tricks in terms of musical time up its sleeve. Now I’m sure you can find all of these on youtube and I don’t want to drop a ton of different embedded players so I’ve limited myself to three. You have no idea how hard this is, go buy the soundtrack now!
