Loungin Thoughts 1/10/12: Spin-Offs

As I sit here with no work to do at my 9-5, I reminisce about some games I used to play, and realized a few had some spin-off games that weren’t that bad. It makes me wonder why there aren’t more spin-offs in the gaming industry.

By spin-off I mean a game that had a side character go on to be the star of their own game. Think any game staring Shadow the Hedgehog for instance as a good example. Shadow was first introduced in Sonic Adventure 2 and eventually had his own game. Any game featuring Mario’s little brother Luigi also counts as a spin-off, as are any Wario games.

Magus from Chrono Trigger

There are plenty of games where a side or secondary character is very popular yet there aren’t many games that allow that character to really shine on their own. This would work for so many characters. Who wouldn’t want to see Geno from Mario RPG get his own game? What about Auron from Final Fantasy X? Maybe even a game or two for bad guys to tell a good portion of their lives that the regular game doesn’t tell. Wouldn’t you like to see the growth of Magus from Chrono Trigger? Or maybe play out the storyline of Scorpions life from Mortal Kombat?

Now, I’ve named a lot of more RPGs than other genre’s because those are the ones with the most side or secondary characters and probably the easiest to do (think Final Fantasy Crisis Core), but it could work with many other types of games. I just think many side characters could and should star in their own game more often

As a fan of the Black Hedgehog, allow me to say that he is one side character that should NOT have had his own side game, mainly b/c it sucked.
