Oh yeah you read that correctly.  Square-Enix is working on what will be their next addition to their role playing catalog and the 3rd in what is called the “Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII compilation”.  The other game rounding out this compilation is called Final Fantasy Agito XIII which will be playable only on the playstation portable.  All three games take place in the same Final Fantasy XIII world but are all unrelated.  So none is a prequel or sequel to another.  We are going to focus on Final Fantasy Versus XIII for right now.

Little is known about this future installment to the long standing Final Fantasy series but like it’s predecessors, you know that the story will be long and the visuals will be outstanding.  Recent interviews with Square Enix developer/ director Tetsuya Nomura revealed that the gameplay will move a little further away from the typical Final Fantasy game.  The gameplay of Versus XIII is set to be a more realistic derivation of the Kingdom Hearts battle system with a few added 3rd person shooter elements

Nomura, who also directed Kingdom Hearts, has stated that the game will step away from the light and magical aesthetics of some of the previous games he’s directed and lean more towards a darker, bleak world that is intended to counter previous Final Fantasy games.  Versus XIII is set to take place in a more “realistic” world with more believable characters (I’m guessing no talking stuffed animals).  As proof of his dedication to realism, Versus XIII will feature a lot more graphic violence with instances of blood.

Nomura has also stated, in the Japanese magazine “Dengeki Playstation”, that he plans to add previously unseen “tricky” battle sequences similar to what was displayed in the CGI movie, Final Fantasy Advent Children.  The old school traversable maps, pretty much the maps from before Final Fantasy X, will return as well as vehicles such as an airship and a car to make traveling along the large open world map quicker.

Be on the look out for more news and reports for what I’m sure will be yet another classic entry to the longest running RPG franchise of all time.  Square-Enix will be having a press conference on January 11th, 2011 about their “Fabula Nova Crystallis” series so we should be getting more news around then.
