Black Knight Sword is a side-scrolling action-platformer with plenty of personality developed by Grasshopper (No More Heroes series)and Digital Reality. Players take control of a character that becomes the Black Knight by using his sword and it’s a pretty sweet ass sword.
Right from the beginning, the game’s mechanics feel reminiscent of Castlevania while fresh. You are able to dodge roll, jump, double jump and swing your sword in multiple directions, so maneuvering felt fluid and enjoyable. For every enemy that you take out (which results in a fair amount of blood spraying from their body), you collect hearts that can be used at an in-game merchant that provides health and upgrades to your character. The enemies are an ugly lot so smiting them feels a bit more satisfying than normal.
The quirky music and grim theater setting of Black Knight Sword has a dark fairy-tale vibe to it that suits the title nicely. I actually liked the music so much that I went into one menu and just let the music play for about 20 minutes. The only downside of the demo was that it was incredibly short, but it left me wanting more. If you enjoyed 8 or 16 bit sidescrollers then Black Knight Sword is worth a look.
Black Knight Sword is out NOW on XBLA for 800 MS points and $9.99 on PSN.
